CAGED BIRD POEMS
Why does the caged bird sing? These poems are inspired by Paul Lawrence Dunbar's "Sympathy" and Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." We as Wildcat Writers wanted to make an allusion to these two poems. An allusion is a brief reference in a literary work to another literary work. Our class has worked really hard and put a superfluous amount of effort into our poems. The purpose of these poems is to show how life is unfair and sometimes the only thing you can do is fight your way through it.

His Faith by Sandra Anderson
A caged bird will sing….And sing all day.
But you can't understand why he has so much faith.
A caged bird is confused of where he is.
So he tries to plan an escape.
But the strong bars only tell him that his wings will never flap again.
So he opens his throat so that his voice can be heard.
Then the people will understand.
He is not happy where he is.
He wants to be free and soar in the sky.
But he feels like a child on a rainy day.
He only hopes his faith will bring him a rainbow,
and maybe stop the rain.
So I know why a caged bird sings.
Because even when his wings are broken he still has faith.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Niree Bailey
I know
Why the caged bird sings
The same song
She has been singing for 15 years
Even if no one seems to listen
She sings it different
Every time
Because
She feels different
Every time
She sings
That same song she has been singing
For 15 years
She sings it to be heard
But
There are other birds singing
Their own caged bird song
But
This caged bird will
Be heard
So she sings that same song
That one day hopes
To be heard
Heard so well
That free birds want to
Sing that caged bird
Song
Even
If this caged bird
Wants to feel the wind
Under her wings

Trapped by Malik Brown
I know why the caged bird sings.
He is like a little robin.
Itching to turn into a magnificent eagle.
He is like the smallest Smurf in a land of giants.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings.
He feels as if he is being held back.
Never being able to play.
He knows he can make a difference.
I know the caged bird sings.
He sings to prove himself.
To show he can’t be defeated.
To show you can’t undermine him.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings.
He sings to keep faith.
He sings to keep pride.
He sings to show he is not defeated.
I know why the caged bird sings.

Angry Birds by Nicholas Calloway
I know why the caged bird sings
Maybe because he had a bad dream
Or he might have thought of a bad thing
Maybe because his leg is broken and he’s sad and can’t feel a thing
But what if the caged bird is mean?
I know what the caged bird means.
I know why the caged birds sings
His mom and dad must have left him home alone
He sleeps all alone and can’t receive any calls because he has no phone
I know what the caged bird means
But what If I’m wrong about why the caged bird sings
What if i’m wrong about everything
Why does the caged bird sing?
I know why the caged bird sings
Because he’s fearless he doesn’t fear anything
Money Is on his mind but he isn’t seeing any green
The caged bird is stuck, that’s why he acts so rough
He likes getting in trouble, he can’t get enough
That's why he’s caged now. I know how the caged bird feels.
I know why the caged bird sings
Maybe because he’s sick
Always trying to be slick
Not this time caged bird, that’s it
I know why the caged bird sings
And I know what you mean
I know how you feel
Caged bird I know everything.

Caged Bird Trying to Escape by Tyler Carothers
The free bird screams joy
wonders why he has so much greatness
he flies and sings freedom
and flies backwards so
he can taste the wonderful breeze
Because he’ll never forget he’s free
A bird that has no freedom
sits in a cage and stings like a bee
He sings for freedom and asks himself
who am I
but he knows one day
He’ll Fly
The free bird searches for food
while the caged bird starves
for the caged bird it’s hard
for the caged bird its cold
but no one knows
I know why the caged bird sings
eyes flooded and wings blooded
He just wants to send a message to heaven
so he sings and sings
I know why the caged bird sings!

Shyness by Carliysia Clark
I know why the caged bird sings.
It sings to be like the free bird,
Wild and outgoing.
Not afraid to show its true colors.
The caged bird sings to be heard.
For it wants chains to be broken.
Broken by the caged bird itself.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know how the caged bird feels.
Why it’s afraid to show herself.
Why the caged bird feels it’s by herself.
Scared to speak out for herself
For her kindness shows and her weakness grows.
I know how the caged bird feels.
I know why the caged bird sings.
It sings because one day it will break free.
That it will go without any worries in the world
of what anyone says.
Her confidence will grow.
It will be jovial.
The caged bird will speak for herself without
any hesitation.
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Caged Bird Sings Because It Is Afraid To Fail by Luezarn Cooper-Voss
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
When they are there for whole world to see, they feel sick because everyone is looking at them.
The littlest mistake which causes everyone to laugh.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
Makes them feel like a vampire afraid of a silver stake.
They are trying to build courage which they know no one else can make.
They point and laugh which a person can not take.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
When they try to fly someone bumps them back down.
Then it becomes harder for their courage to be found.
Their hearts begin to pound.
They are afraid that they will continue to fail.
So they only sing in a cage made like a jail.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
They can not fly straight without shaking.
They are trying to be in the making.
When they try they begin fail.
They roll up in a ball so tiny they can fit in a cup.
Silently, waiting to give up.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
They finally find the courage to open their wings.
They soon decided to sing loudly.
They realize they are powerful beyond their measure.
They they decided to stick together.

The Caged Bird Looks for Love by Vincenity Corner
I know why the caged bird sings
The caged bird sings from pain & hurt
The caged bird sings because she’s low in the dirt
I know why the caged bird sings
The caged bird sings for freedom and cries to fly
but her wings are to weak still she tries
I know why the caged bird sings
She sings for love, hope & joy
She sings for comfort from her mom, dad & more
She cries at night from
feeling lonely & sad with no one by her side
All the caged bird does is hide
No one really knows how she feels inside
The caged bird looks into anyone just to be loved
She cries
She cries
She cries
She cries at night because her family isn’t bright.

Listen To The Heart of a Caged Bird by Shimonique Davis
I’m a little bird Trapped and Caged
who hasn’t had a pleasant journey,
I can be concurred by a real mother’s love, only
the only heartbeat I hear is my own
if only you were here to hold me
my life would be less lonely
Isn’t it funny how the free bird never sings
At the age of four you would think he’s Prince William
and whenever he calls he’s always rewarded with a piece of sympathy
I’ve noticed that's why you're never there for me
I hear ever since baby bird came your heart beats
3x more than when you first laid eyes on me!
Who am I to judge? I mean all I want is a mother’s love
and not to feel like there’s not enough love for me
I've missed out on so much love
I'm confused on if this is how a mother’s love supposed to be!
I will sing “Chirp chirp” until you give all the love I need
maybe this is how its suppose to be
for me I will keep flying until
I am at a new loving destiny!

I Know How The Caged Birds Feels! by Maya Erving
I know how the caged birds feels!
When the sun is shining bright on the morning hills,
When the wind stirs soft thru the windmill
and the river is flowing.
When the first bird sings with its beak wide open and the others just chirping and chirping.
I know how the caged birds feel.
I know how the caged birds feels!
Sad and lonely and unfree,
Trapped in a cage, not having enough room to sing.
I wonder if the caged birds think as much as we think…
I know how the caged birds feel.
Full and filled with anger,
the caged birds are hurt.
I know how the caged birds feel.
I know how the caged birds feel,
When his wings are sore for not being spread.
It’s not a carol of joy.
It’s a song of hurt and disappointment.
But a prayer can heal its heart, and a prayer could make the caged birds unhurt.
I know why the caged birds sing with its head held high.
They sing to heaven.
I know how the caged birds feels!

Not Wanting To Feel Like A Caged Bird by Brenda Farley
I also know why the caged bird sings,
I felt like a caged bird,
Trapped, lonely, sad, and hurt
To feel the way I did I must tell you why.
I was angry and sad
People asking and asking
How do you feel? How do you feel?
I just wanted everyone to freeze and stop
Just be quiet and let me heal,
But I knew they wouldn't because they
was hurting too, but not the way I was.
I was asking why and why and no one came
up with a because.
Trapped, lonely, sad, and hurt.
I was froze, no one understood.
I came to realizing that they weren't ready,
Ready to answer any of my questions.
I dont think I wanted my questions
answered at the time either.
But I know one thing about one of my questions
because..
because I wouldn’t heal correctly,
even if they did answer them late or early.

Why the Caged Bird Really Sings by Libations Fields
I know why the caged bird sings,
Being too young to fly,
Brothers poking him in the eye,
Until his mother makes him fly,
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings,
He sings because his imagination perished,
He can only dream about flying,
every day he dream that he is flying again,
Until he awakens and realizes that it’s only an illusion,
I know why the caged bird sings.
The caged bird sings because,
He is held in captivity like an exhibit,
Oh, that’s why the caged bird sings,
The caged bird sings because,
Old people come to visit him,
Smelling like Bengay and underprice fragrance.
The caged bird sings because,
His nostrils are in forever torment,
His spirit is forever dead,
To top it off the caged bird still can’t fly,
I know why the caged bird sings.
The old people gossip to more old people,
Bringing more old people and a surplus of grandchildren,
The caged bird can’t sleep due to free birds chirping,
The trees knocking on the windows,
Flashbacks to the dreadful day of him getting captured,
I know why the caged bird sings.

This is Me by Chrisshawn Furdge
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird says bing
because its time for you, me, and all to be free
Getting in trouble for the things you didn’t do is petty
But sometimes you just have to be ready
Thinking about your future is interesting boy
But people are playing and fighting
with you like you’re a little toy
Sitting in your house house like
a bird sits in its nest
Helping and providing for your family
that acts like a pest
You never really know what keeps you up everyday
But it’s the chirping birds that you hear in every way
Exaggerating about my profession I need to stay calm
But we all don’t know that
it’s in our palm.

A Free Caged Bird by Alexis Hanks
In its own world
Who are you to say…
What it wants
How it feels
Who it is
Trapped with no way to get out
I know why the caged bird sings
The tears that no one sees
For it is hidden in the deep blue sea
LET ME GO!!
SET ME FREE!!
It is the scream that no one hears
All hidden covered with tears
Its only dream to touch the sky and
Fly
Fly
Fly
The cool breeze on its wings
I know why the caged bird sings
Like all of the others it has a passion
The free bird smiles
Yet the caged bird frowns
The free bird flies
I know why the caged bird sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Doesn’t Laugh by Jerica Johnson
I know why the caged bird sings
She starts to make friends they
get to see the real her and say
she will never have friends.
I know why the caged bird sings
I know how the caged bird feels
the friends she made weren’t really
friends they teased her, disbelieved in her,
bleed her
Now that she has achieved her
dreams they looked up into the sky and
say “Oh my she can really fly her wings”
I know why the caged bird sang a song.
They would say the pieces of her puzzle
would never come to life. She then tells
the teacher and he tells her every
thing is going to be just right
I know why the caged bird
wants to flap her wings
the caged bird was never
able to share her dreams
I know why the caged
bird wants to flap her
wings the caged she
was never able to
share her things.

Please Let Me Fly by Daurice Lee
I know why the caged bird sings.
When her son is missing
from a place he calls home.
When his wife is crying,
and his cloned genes are gone.
The caged bird sings
for a gun-free city,
and the dropout students
who followed the road of pity.
For the blood of her son
is no longer flowing,
although the legacy of his life
just keeps on going.
The caged bird sings
a wonderful tune.
As the deaths of Chicago
are shown on the news.
Although the caged bird
fights to get out,
It still suffers internal pain
from a weapon with a spout.
The caged bird sings
for freedom,
from guns, drugs, and killings
in its Chicago kingdom.

Without by Tanisha Minnis
When I’m without him, I feel like a caged bird.
He’s so sweet talking, so rocking.
He’s got everything that a girl’s wanting.
Piano cutie, he plays it groovy!
And I can’t keep myself from doing something stupid.
I think I’m really falling for his smile.
Get butterflies when he says my name
He’s got something special.
When he’s looking at me I wanna get all sentimental.
A caged bird is what I feel like when he’s not by my side.
But when we’re together, I feel like Bonnie and Clyde.
And he’s got a way of making me feel like everything I do is
perfectly fine, the stars are aligned when I’m with him. And I’m so into him.
I know exactly why the caged bird sings.

Free Birds by Stephanie Mitchell
I know why the Caged Bird sings
I know how the caged bird feels
Wind blowing through his cage
But a prayer that he sends from his heart
He sings for freedom and hope
But no one hears him
I know why the Caged bird shares his dreams
I know why he beats, his wings
He know someday he’ll escape his fears
He looks at the free bird flying
He wonders how it feels to be free
So alone in beaten till he bleeds
I know why the Caged Bird sings
Someday he’ll be flying away
All he has to do is dream dream away
He sings to take away the pain
But no one hears him
Staying in the same place being beaten away
He knows they’ll come save him
He’ll be free
Him and the free bird will fly away
Enjoying the air
When he beats his bars that’s a sign for freedom
I know why the Caged Bird sings.

No One Knows!!! by Skye Minter
I know why the caged bird sings.
They see her as weak,
not an ongoing beam
they think she won’t pop lately as it seems
down before dawn she moves her wings.
Singing aloud but no one hears her
she opens her beak to let it out
but she flies back in the nest
crying threw her snout.
A bird that has no one
to have no fun.
Young and fearful
crying so tearful.
As she flies away the caged bird is free
she is tired of it all can’t you see.
She flies to certain point
she drops and land is on a tree.
“Oh why oh why was it me,”
singing loudly still no one hears her
she cries “ huh” she sighs.
She gets up and falls back down
why couldn't she be the one with the crown
I know why the caged bird sing to make that special sound

Hidden Talents by Xavier Nash
I have so many talents
from sports to arts
I have so many talents I don't know where to start
I know why the caged bird sings
I love to play football and swim
I even know a little about
shooting the ball in the rim
but some people try to keep me from
doing great things
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird sings
at the end of the day I do
what I am comfortable with
some people don’t want me to swim
Well I don’t care because I
can really swim
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird sings
my parents say they don’t want me to drown
they looked at me as if I was some sort
of clown.
I can do what I want
I know why the caged bird sings

I Know Why by Brianna Parks
I feel like a caged bird,
That could never be free.
As I grow up in this cruel world,
I will never be able to show the real me.
I feel like a caged bird,
That sings for freedom every day.
But this cage is the only thing blocking my way.
I know why the caged bird sings.
She sings to let the world know how terrible she feels,
When she sings through the whole night,
And never goes silent, they feed her pills.
She’s hurting inside and no one knows,
It’s like she doesn’t exist,
As if she’s a ghost.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Her heart is in pain,
And singing is the only thing keeping her from going insane.
She wants to fly,
She’s tired of living,
Her whole life is a lie.
“Shut up,” “Be quiet,” I don't want to hear your voice,
That’s what they tell her, but they have no choice.
I know why the caged bird sings.
As the darkness fills the sky,
She wants to be out there, she wants to fly.
As her anger builds up because she’s trapped in the cage,
Her feelings are so strong the other birds can feel her rage.
She doesn’t understand why they are doing this to her,
She has already given up, she decided to surrender.
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Reason It Sings! by Elijah Pickett
The caged bird might sing about a driver’s permit.
The caged bird might sing about being broke.
The caged bird might sing about employment.
No one will never know.
The caged bird might sing about muscle.
The caged bird might sing about loneliness.
The caged bird might sing about being the only child.
No one could ever tell.
The caged bird might sing about laziness.
The caged bird might sing about encouragement.
The caged bird might rap instead of sing.
No one never would never have a clue.

Why Shouldn’t the Caged Bird Sing? By Jealissa Presswood
Everyday of my life since the 4th grade I’ve been like
a caged bird locked without a key.
Through my life there have been some wide open lay-ups
and missed jump shots.
I know why the caged bird sings!
I’ve failed to realize that I am more than enough,
and I’m just too blind to see.
Sometimes I feel like I’m alone, I realize
life would no longer be free.
I know why the caged bird sings!
Hearing gunshots and screams knowing
that that’s all tears of blood.
Seeing my mom struggle to get back on her feet knowing that
it was my fault that she fell.
I know why the caged bird sing.
Seeing my sister go from school to school, knowing that
her financial aid was no good.
I hustle up and down the court to get this money
thanking God everyday for the days he has given me.
I know why the caged bird beats his wings.

Happy and Whole, Broken and Shattered by Kenneth Sanders
The free bird has no worries
He flies wherever he wants
He hangs on any tree he wants
The bird always leaves the nest
Not having to worry about predators
The free bird is happy
The bird flies back to the nest
Knowing his flock is coming back for sure
But a bird that’s locked up
Feels as if he’s in a box
Somewhat like a mine
He never leaves the nest
Fearful of the hawk that stalks his nest
The bird cries when his flock leaves
the nest knowing it’s a big possibility
that they’re not going to fly back
I know why the caged bird sings
The free bird spreads his wings
He soars through the sky singing
When he lands he’s in his own state of mind
The trees are green the sky is blue he
sits in a wind but a wind not too cool
The worms are fat the berries are shiny blue
the sunflower seeds are planted and the free
bird sings a powerful blue
The caged bird is tied up
because he’s locked up
The caged bird flies but he’s out of luck
Hunted by human predators
Shot down then buried up
The caged bird’s life is bottled up
No singing No life No family
I know why the caged bird sings

Still Sings On by Dondre Savage
Maybe the caged birds sings about its height.
Maybe the caged bird sings about his family.
Maybe the caged bird sings about the streets.
Maybe the caged bird sings about money.
Maybe the caged bird sings about girls.
I don’t know why the caged bird sings.
Not because the caged bird isn’t tall enough, not because he can't go outside because the streets aren’t safe, not that money isn’t coming in fast enough, and not because the girls always leave him wondering what if someone treats his sisters like that.
Only if I knew why the caged birds sings.
But the reason I am still here is to figure out

Singing Out for Freedom! by Brandi Smith
I know why the caged bird sings
she sings for freedom when the sun shines bright hitting the bars of my cage.
Singing a song for all to hear, wishing to be that free bird flying.
While other birds are free she sits and sings
Fresh air hitting her feathers
Following through her hairy body
I know why the caged bird sings.
Right now I feel like a caged bird
Everyone crowded around me
Throwing all their expectations at me
Singing out the caged bird wishing someone would just understand.
I know why the caged bird sings in a fearful tone
Everyone thinks nobody knows the singing is a cry for help from a caged bird
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings
LALALAHHH!
When it’s wings bruise it still manage to fly
When her vocal cords are damaged the bird still sang
The bird sings a song with rhythm everyone can groove to.
I actually understand now
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Relentless Caged Bird Wanting Out! by Kristina Smith
I know why the caged bird sings
Filled with belittlement and shame
Torn down over the years
Filled with pain
Seeing his freedom diminishing
No way to be free
Wings clipped, toes tied
No where to go, no where to hide
Nothing to do but watch
Watch everyone fly
The breeze in their wings
The misery in his eyes
No way to fight back
No power to have
Glued to that caged floor
Locks hanging from the only door
I know why the caged bird sings
It’s not a song of joy or glee
But a song with a painful melody
Singing of his life struggles, wanting to be free

Skeleton In My Closet by Terrell Smith
On anon the bird sings.
On and on I try to figure out why.
Does he sing about the love or despair?
The caged bird rants on and on through the night.
On and on he crys
Why little bird why do you cry?
Here is the reason the reason that will show you why he sings.
For there are many monsters in his closet ones that are saddening ones that are cruel.
The bird sings secrets of a fool.
Oh what a fool he used to be now that he is a bird the only thing he can do is sing.
His confession time is up so please bird stop singing you are singing for what?

Let The Bird Go by J’kyra Space
I know why the caged bird sings
He knows he will be free one day
All he has to do is dream
He sings a song of freedom and hope
Because he knows the best is yet to come
He looks at the free bird fly
He wonders does being a free bird looks as good as it seems
All the worms you could eat
Not having to stay in the same place
What a wonderful world that would be
I know why the caged bird sings
He sings so everyone can hear his cry for help
Let me go
Let me go
I’ve been caged long enough
Being free is all I want to be
Don’t you know how it feels to be imprisoned all your life?
Can’t I live the life I’ve always dreamed?
But no one hears him
They just let him rot in his cage
He knows one day freedom will ring
He’ll be free
Him and the free bird will sing and fly together
What a wonderful world that would be

Please Don’t Judge Me, I’m Human Too by Maya Tarver
I know why the caged bird sings
behind my smile there is a story
to tell no one would ever
know what I go through. In
My life I am nice and kind to others
but they still bring me down.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Everybody is just a different story to tell
but everyday in people’s lives they
go through hell.
With so much hate inside feelings
you cannot deny.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Throughout my life
I try to face the different problems
that come my way I know
why the caged bird sings.
Now that you get the idea of how I feel and
go through you should have a good life because
everybody knows why the caged bird sings.

I Know Why Birds Sing by Patsean Terrell
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because his mom wouldn’t let him go let him grow up to be what he’s going to be.
I know why the caged bird sings. The caged bird sings.
Because he’s always put up for something he didn’t start.
I know why the caged bird sings The caged bird sings.
Because his little sister tells everything he does.
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because school is all year around and 5 days out the week.
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because no one is listening to him.
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because nobody understands the person that he is but one person and she’s not even family.
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because his aunt his mother’s baby sister is also his baby sister
she acts like one looks like one but is not.
I know why the caged bird sings the caged bird sings.
Because trust is not none trust is something that you earn.
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Birds That Are Cages Sing by Woodrow Turner
The birds in the sky are shrouded
round our head & it makes us feel lonely.
We sing to get away from worries & pain.
We want to get out, we scratch, scream, and shout,
sometimes we will doubt we will
find the answer.
That’s why we shall sing, to do everything in our power to continue on forward
The satisfactions in our life are like a caged bird
yet we dream we will be free one day.
But I can see we are trapped, in one place,
with nowhere to go, try to stop us from doing our thing.
I know why the caged bird sings.
As we are locked away
inside of a cage, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
We will sing forward until we break through.
But we can see that we are trapped, in one place
with nowhere to go, try to stop us from doing our thing.
I know why the caged bird sings.

I Feel Like A Caged Bird by Malik Ware
I feel like a bird trapped inside a cage, without any freedom we get bored.
When the tv is on but there is nothing to watch.
When the doors are open just can’t find a way out.
No room to open his wing and fly.
I know why the caged bird sings.
He sings when his beak starts to get dry.
When he feels alone, and bored.
It is emotional, and a joy to sing.
He sings because he has no escape to being free.
He sings for the pain that we think is sweet.
I know why the caged bird beats his wing.
For the silence of the cage at night.
And the irritation of the space.
He beats his wings when he does not get what he wants.
He beats his wings when unknown people stare at him.
He beats his wings when he’s angry.
I know why the caged bird cries.
He cries when he can't get food when he want like the free birds.
He cries because he misses all of his family and friends.
When he think he cry.
When he tries to forget about it he cry.
He cries to get out some stress.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Tecora Wiley
The caged bird sings when girls are out here getting abused
by their parents. Crying themselves to sleep every night.
Not knowing what to do.
Parents can’t pay their bills. Now you are sitting in the dark,
tears running down your face. Stressed out when their kids don’t
have any food to eat. Now your kids are wondering what they will
eat tonight.
I hear the cage bird crying for help when its arm is broken.
Wondering if somebody is ever going to find her, wandering in
the cold dark and helpless night. If it’s gonna have another meal
or will tonight's be her last.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill, with life gone
unknown or unanswered. Her tune is heard on a
distant hill. For the caged bird sings of sympathy.
This is why the caged bird sings.

She Chirps “Success” by Heaven Williams
Her wings aren’t able to spread as far
She’s scared to roam the blocks near and far
The bird peeks through the bars hoping to be free
But she sees something that she’ll never be
The hurtful chirps, and hard pecks
made her want to show no respect
She sat in the back of an unsuccessful cage
small and alone, filled with rage
Just open the door to a world of success
and you’ll be surprised by her steps of progress
The bird peeks through the bars hoping to be free
but the key is lost and now she’ll never be
Now I know why the caged bird sings

Fear is Our Biggest Nightmare by Jameesha Williams
I know why the caged bird
sings
we hide from the bad and never face our fears.
If the cage open why not leave?
Why so scared to be on your own?
one day it’s going to happen.
I know why the caged bird sings
one day you're going to have to spread your wings and
go
far
far
far
away
to
the
place
we
all
dream
Why be caged when there’s a key to unlock the gate
fear is
our
biggest nightmare
let's all dream.
You are scared of this I’m scared of that
but the caged bird sings without out fear. Why can't we do that?
We are so scared of being scared we all are free.
I
know
why
the
caged
bird
sings
of joy
now you are
f
a
r
far
f
away beating your fear

A caged bird will sing….And sing all day.
But you can't understand why he has so much faith.
A caged bird is confused of where he is.
So he tries to plan an escape.
But the strong bars only tell him that his wings will never flap again.
So he opens his throat so that his voice can be heard.
Then the people will understand.
He is not happy where he is.
He wants to be free and soar in the sky.
But he feels like a child on a rainy day.
He only hopes his faith will bring him a rainbow,
and maybe stop the rain.
So I know why a caged bird sings.
Because even when his wings are broken he still has faith.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Niree Bailey
I know
Why the caged bird sings
The same song
She has been singing for 15 years
Even if no one seems to listen
She sings it different
Every time
Because
She feels different
Every time
She sings
That same song she has been singing
For 15 years
She sings it to be heard
But
There are other birds singing
Their own caged bird song
But
This caged bird will
Be heard
So she sings that same song
That one day hopes
To be heard
Heard so well
That free birds want to
Sing that caged bird
Song
Even
If this caged bird
Wants to feel the wind
Under her wings

Trapped by Malik Brown
I know why the caged bird sings.
He is like a little robin.
Itching to turn into a magnificent eagle.
He is like the smallest Smurf in a land of giants.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings.
He feels as if he is being held back.
Never being able to play.
He knows he can make a difference.
I know the caged bird sings.
He sings to prove himself.
To show he can’t be defeated.
To show you can’t undermine him.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings.
He sings to keep faith.
He sings to keep pride.
He sings to show he is not defeated.
I know why the caged bird sings.

Angry Birds by Nicholas Calloway
I know why the caged bird sings
Maybe because he had a bad dream
Or he might have thought of a bad thing
Maybe because his leg is broken and he’s sad and can’t feel a thing
But what if the caged bird is mean?
I know what the caged bird means.
I know why the caged birds sings
His mom and dad must have left him home alone
He sleeps all alone and can’t receive any calls because he has no phone
I know what the caged bird means
But what If I’m wrong about why the caged bird sings
What if i’m wrong about everything
Why does the caged bird sing?
I know why the caged bird sings
Because he’s fearless he doesn’t fear anything
Money Is on his mind but he isn’t seeing any green
The caged bird is stuck, that’s why he acts so rough
He likes getting in trouble, he can’t get enough
That's why he’s caged now. I know how the caged bird feels.
I know why the caged bird sings
Maybe because he’s sick
Always trying to be slick
Not this time caged bird, that’s it
I know why the caged bird sings
And I know what you mean
I know how you feel
Caged bird I know everything.

Caged Bird Trying to Escape by Tyler Carothers
The free bird screams joy
wonders why he has so much greatness
he flies and sings freedom
and flies backwards so
he can taste the wonderful breeze
Because he’ll never forget he’s free
A bird that has no freedom
sits in a cage and stings like a bee
He sings for freedom and asks himself
who am I
but he knows one day
He’ll Fly
The free bird searches for food
while the caged bird starves
for the caged bird it’s hard
for the caged bird its cold
but no one knows
I know why the caged bird sings
eyes flooded and wings blooded
He just wants to send a message to heaven
so he sings and sings
I know why the caged bird sings!

Shyness by Carliysia Clark
I know why the caged bird sings.
It sings to be like the free bird,
Wild and outgoing.
Not afraid to show its true colors.
The caged bird sings to be heard.
For it wants chains to be broken.
Broken by the caged bird itself.
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know how the caged bird feels.
Why it’s afraid to show herself.
Why the caged bird feels it’s by herself.
Scared to speak out for herself
For her kindness shows and her weakness grows.
I know how the caged bird feels.
I know why the caged bird sings.
It sings because one day it will break free.
That it will go without any worries in the world
of what anyone says.
Her confidence will grow.
It will be jovial.
The caged bird will speak for herself without
any hesitation.
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Caged Bird Sings Because It Is Afraid To Fail by Luezarn Cooper-Voss
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
When they are there for whole world to see, they feel sick because everyone is looking at them.
The littlest mistake which causes everyone to laugh.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
Makes them feel like a vampire afraid of a silver stake.
They are trying to build courage which they know no one else can make.
They point and laugh which a person can not take.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
When they try to fly someone bumps them back down.
Then it becomes harder for their courage to be found.
Their hearts begin to pound.
They are afraid that they will continue to fail.
So they only sing in a cage made like a jail.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
They can not fly straight without shaking.
They are trying to be in the making.
When they try they begin fail.
They roll up in a ball so tiny they can fit in a cup.
Silently, waiting to give up.
I know why the caged bird sings.
They sing because they are afraid to open their wings.
They finally find the courage to open their wings.
They soon decided to sing loudly.
They realize they are powerful beyond their measure.
They they decided to stick together.

The Caged Bird Looks for Love by Vincenity Corner
I know why the caged bird sings
The caged bird sings from pain & hurt
The caged bird sings because she’s low in the dirt
I know why the caged bird sings
The caged bird sings for freedom and cries to fly
but her wings are to weak still she tries
I know why the caged bird sings
She sings for love, hope & joy
She sings for comfort from her mom, dad & more
She cries at night from
feeling lonely & sad with no one by her side
All the caged bird does is hide
No one really knows how she feels inside
The caged bird looks into anyone just to be loved
She cries
She cries
She cries
She cries at night because her family isn’t bright.

Listen To The Heart of a Caged Bird by Shimonique Davis
I’m a little bird Trapped and Caged
who hasn’t had a pleasant journey,
I can be concurred by a real mother’s love, only
the only heartbeat I hear is my own
if only you were here to hold me
my life would be less lonely
Isn’t it funny how the free bird never sings
At the age of four you would think he’s Prince William
and whenever he calls he’s always rewarded with a piece of sympathy
I’ve noticed that's why you're never there for me
I hear ever since baby bird came your heart beats
3x more than when you first laid eyes on me!
Who am I to judge? I mean all I want is a mother’s love
and not to feel like there’s not enough love for me
I've missed out on so much love
I'm confused on if this is how a mother’s love supposed to be!
I will sing “Chirp chirp” until you give all the love I need
maybe this is how its suppose to be
for me I will keep flying until
I am at a new loving destiny!

I Know How The Caged Birds Feels! by Maya Erving
I know how the caged birds feels!
When the sun is shining bright on the morning hills,
When the wind stirs soft thru the windmill
and the river is flowing.
When the first bird sings with its beak wide open and the others just chirping and chirping.
I know how the caged birds feel.
I know how the caged birds feels!
Sad and lonely and unfree,
Trapped in a cage, not having enough room to sing.
I wonder if the caged birds think as much as we think…
I know how the caged birds feel.
Full and filled with anger,
the caged birds are hurt.
I know how the caged birds feel.
I know how the caged birds feel,
When his wings are sore for not being spread.
It’s not a carol of joy.
It’s a song of hurt and disappointment.
But a prayer can heal its heart, and a prayer could make the caged birds unhurt.
I know why the caged birds sing with its head held high.
They sing to heaven.
I know how the caged birds feels!

Not Wanting To Feel Like A Caged Bird by Brenda Farley
I also know why the caged bird sings,
I felt like a caged bird,
Trapped, lonely, sad, and hurt
To feel the way I did I must tell you why.
I was angry and sad
People asking and asking
How do you feel? How do you feel?
I just wanted everyone to freeze and stop
Just be quiet and let me heal,
But I knew they wouldn't because they
was hurting too, but not the way I was.
I was asking why and why and no one came
up with a because.
Trapped, lonely, sad, and hurt.
I was froze, no one understood.
I came to realizing that they weren't ready,
Ready to answer any of my questions.
I dont think I wanted my questions
answered at the time either.
But I know one thing about one of my questions
because..
because I wouldn’t heal correctly,
even if they did answer them late or early.

Why the Caged Bird Really Sings by Libations Fields
I know why the caged bird sings,
Being too young to fly,
Brothers poking him in the eye,
Until his mother makes him fly,
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings,
He sings because his imagination perished,
He can only dream about flying,
every day he dream that he is flying again,
Until he awakens and realizes that it’s only an illusion,
I know why the caged bird sings.
The caged bird sings because,
He is held in captivity like an exhibit,
Oh, that’s why the caged bird sings,
The caged bird sings because,
Old people come to visit him,
Smelling like Bengay and underprice fragrance.
The caged bird sings because,
His nostrils are in forever torment,
His spirit is forever dead,
To top it off the caged bird still can’t fly,
I know why the caged bird sings.
The old people gossip to more old people,
Bringing more old people and a surplus of grandchildren,
The caged bird can’t sleep due to free birds chirping,
The trees knocking on the windows,
Flashbacks to the dreadful day of him getting captured,
I know why the caged bird sings.

This is Me by Chrisshawn Furdge
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird says bing
because its time for you, me, and all to be free
Getting in trouble for the things you didn’t do is petty
But sometimes you just have to be ready
Thinking about your future is interesting boy
But people are playing and fighting
with you like you’re a little toy
Sitting in your house house like
a bird sits in its nest
Helping and providing for your family
that acts like a pest
You never really know what keeps you up everyday
But it’s the chirping birds that you hear in every way
Exaggerating about my profession I need to stay calm
But we all don’t know that
it’s in our palm.

A Free Caged Bird by Alexis Hanks
In its own world
Who are you to say…
What it wants
How it feels
Who it is
Trapped with no way to get out
I know why the caged bird sings
The tears that no one sees
For it is hidden in the deep blue sea
LET ME GO!!
SET ME FREE!!
It is the scream that no one hears
All hidden covered with tears
Its only dream to touch the sky and
Fly
Fly
Fly
The cool breeze on its wings
I know why the caged bird sings
Like all of the others it has a passion
The free bird smiles
Yet the caged bird frowns
The free bird flies
I know why the caged bird sings

I Know Why the Caged Bird Doesn’t Laugh by Jerica Johnson
I know why the caged bird sings
She starts to make friends they
get to see the real her and say
she will never have friends.
I know why the caged bird sings
I know how the caged bird feels
the friends she made weren’t really
friends they teased her, disbelieved in her,
bleed her
Now that she has achieved her
dreams they looked up into the sky and
say “Oh my she can really fly her wings”
I know why the caged bird sang a song.
They would say the pieces of her puzzle
would never come to life. She then tells
the teacher and he tells her every
thing is going to be just right
I know why the caged bird
wants to flap her wings
the caged bird was never
able to share her dreams
I know why the caged
bird wants to flap her
wings the caged she
was never able to
share her things.

Please Let Me Fly by Daurice Lee
I know why the caged bird sings.
When her son is missing
from a place he calls home.
When his wife is crying,
and his cloned genes are gone.
The caged bird sings
for a gun-free city,
and the dropout students
who followed the road of pity.
For the blood of her son
is no longer flowing,
although the legacy of his life
just keeps on going.
The caged bird sings
a wonderful tune.
As the deaths of Chicago
are shown on the news.
Although the caged bird
fights to get out,
It still suffers internal pain
from a weapon with a spout.
The caged bird sings
for freedom,
from guns, drugs, and killings
in its Chicago kingdom.

Without by Tanisha Minnis
When I’m without him, I feel like a caged bird.
He’s so sweet talking, so rocking.
He’s got everything that a girl’s wanting.
Piano cutie, he plays it groovy!
And I can’t keep myself from doing something stupid.
I think I’m really falling for his smile.
Get butterflies when he says my name
He’s got something special.
When he’s looking at me I wanna get all sentimental.
A caged bird is what I feel like when he’s not by my side.
But when we’re together, I feel like Bonnie and Clyde.
And he’s got a way of making me feel like everything I do is
perfectly fine, the stars are aligned when I’m with him. And I’m so into him.
I know exactly why the caged bird sings.

Free Birds by Stephanie Mitchell
I know why the Caged Bird sings
I know how the caged bird feels
Wind blowing through his cage
But a prayer that he sends from his heart
He sings for freedom and hope
But no one hears him
I know why the Caged bird shares his dreams
I know why he beats, his wings
He know someday he’ll escape his fears
He looks at the free bird flying
He wonders how it feels to be free
So alone in beaten till he bleeds
I know why the Caged Bird sings
Someday he’ll be flying away
All he has to do is dream dream away
He sings to take away the pain
But no one hears him
Staying in the same place being beaten away
He knows they’ll come save him
He’ll be free
Him and the free bird will fly away
Enjoying the air
When he beats his bars that’s a sign for freedom
I know why the Caged Bird sings.

No One Knows!!! by Skye Minter
I know why the caged bird sings.
They see her as weak,
not an ongoing beam
they think she won’t pop lately as it seems
down before dawn she moves her wings.
Singing aloud but no one hears her
she opens her beak to let it out
but she flies back in the nest
crying threw her snout.
A bird that has no one
to have no fun.
Young and fearful
crying so tearful.
As she flies away the caged bird is free
she is tired of it all can’t you see.
She flies to certain point
she drops and land is on a tree.
“Oh why oh why was it me,”
singing loudly still no one hears her
she cries “ huh” she sighs.
She gets up and falls back down
why couldn't she be the one with the crown
I know why the caged bird sing to make that special sound

Hidden Talents by Xavier Nash
I have so many talents
from sports to arts
I have so many talents I don't know where to start
I know why the caged bird sings
I love to play football and swim
I even know a little about
shooting the ball in the rim
but some people try to keep me from
doing great things
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird sings
at the end of the day I do
what I am comfortable with
some people don’t want me to swim
Well I don’t care because I
can really swim
I know why the caged bird sings
I know why the caged bird sings
my parents say they don’t want me to drown
they looked at me as if I was some sort
of clown.
I can do what I want
I know why the caged bird sings

I Know Why by Brianna Parks
I feel like a caged bird,
That could never be free.
As I grow up in this cruel world,
I will never be able to show the real me.
I feel like a caged bird,
That sings for freedom every day.
But this cage is the only thing blocking my way.
I know why the caged bird sings.
She sings to let the world know how terrible she feels,
When she sings through the whole night,
And never goes silent, they feed her pills.
She’s hurting inside and no one knows,
It’s like she doesn’t exist,
As if she’s a ghost.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Her heart is in pain,
And singing is the only thing keeping her from going insane.
She wants to fly,
She’s tired of living,
Her whole life is a lie.
“Shut up,” “Be quiet,” I don't want to hear your voice,
That’s what they tell her, but they have no choice.
I know why the caged bird sings.
As the darkness fills the sky,
She wants to be out there, she wants to fly.
As her anger builds up because she’s trapped in the cage,
Her feelings are so strong the other birds can feel her rage.
She doesn’t understand why they are doing this to her,
She has already given up, she decided to surrender.
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Reason It Sings! by Elijah Pickett
The caged bird might sing about a driver’s permit.
The caged bird might sing about being broke.
The caged bird might sing about employment.
No one will never know.
The caged bird might sing about muscle.
The caged bird might sing about loneliness.
The caged bird might sing about being the only child.
No one could ever tell.
The caged bird might sing about laziness.
The caged bird might sing about encouragement.
The caged bird might rap instead of sing.
No one never would never have a clue.

Why Shouldn’t the Caged Bird Sing? By Jealissa Presswood
Everyday of my life since the 4th grade I’ve been like
a caged bird locked without a key.
Through my life there have been some wide open lay-ups
and missed jump shots.
I know why the caged bird sings!
I’ve failed to realize that I am more than enough,
and I’m just too blind to see.
Sometimes I feel like I’m alone, I realize
life would no longer be free.
I know why the caged bird sings!
Hearing gunshots and screams knowing
that that’s all tears of blood.
Seeing my mom struggle to get back on her feet knowing that
it was my fault that she fell.
I know why the caged bird sing.
Seeing my sister go from school to school, knowing that
her financial aid was no good.
I hustle up and down the court to get this money
thanking God everyday for the days he has given me.
I know why the caged bird beats his wings.

Happy and Whole, Broken and Shattered by Kenneth Sanders
The free bird has no worries
He flies wherever he wants
He hangs on any tree he wants
The bird always leaves the nest
Not having to worry about predators
The free bird is happy
The bird flies back to the nest
Knowing his flock is coming back for sure
But a bird that’s locked up
Feels as if he’s in a box
Somewhat like a mine
He never leaves the nest
Fearful of the hawk that stalks his nest
The bird cries when his flock leaves
the nest knowing it’s a big possibility
that they’re not going to fly back
I know why the caged bird sings
The free bird spreads his wings
He soars through the sky singing
When he lands he’s in his own state of mind
The trees are green the sky is blue he
sits in a wind but a wind not too cool
The worms are fat the berries are shiny blue
the sunflower seeds are planted and the free
bird sings a powerful blue
The caged bird is tied up
because he’s locked up
The caged bird flies but he’s out of luck
Hunted by human predators
Shot down then buried up
The caged bird’s life is bottled up
No singing No life No family
I know why the caged bird sings

Still Sings On by Dondre Savage
Maybe the caged birds sings about its height.
Maybe the caged bird sings about his family.
Maybe the caged bird sings about the streets.
Maybe the caged bird sings about money.
Maybe the caged bird sings about girls.
I don’t know why the caged bird sings.
Not because the caged bird isn’t tall enough, not because he can't go outside because the streets aren’t safe, not that money isn’t coming in fast enough, and not because the girls always leave him wondering what if someone treats his sisters like that.
Only if I knew why the caged birds sings.
But the reason I am still here is to figure out

Singing Out for Freedom! by Brandi Smith
I know why the caged bird sings
she sings for freedom when the sun shines bright hitting the bars of my cage.
Singing a song for all to hear, wishing to be that free bird flying.
While other birds are free she sits and sings
Fresh air hitting her feathers
Following through her hairy body
I know why the caged bird sings.
Right now I feel like a caged bird
Everyone crowded around me
Throwing all their expectations at me
Singing out the caged bird wishing someone would just understand.
I know why the caged bird sings in a fearful tone
Everyone thinks nobody knows the singing is a cry for help from a caged bird
I know why the caged bird sings.
I know why the caged bird sings
LALALAHHH!
When it’s wings bruise it still manage to fly
When her vocal cords are damaged the bird still sang
The bird sings a song with rhythm everyone can groove to.
I actually understand now
I know why the caged bird sings.

The Relentless Caged Bird Wanting Out! by Kristina Smith
I know why the caged bird sings
Filled with belittlement and shame
Torn down over the years
Filled with pain
Seeing his freedom diminishing
No way to be free
Wings clipped, toes tied
No where to go, no where to hide
Nothing to do but watch
Watch everyone fly
The breeze in their wings
The misery in his eyes
No way to fight back
No power to have
Glued to that caged floor
Locks hanging from the only door
I know why the caged bird sings
It’s not a song of joy or glee
But a song with a painful melody
Singing of his life struggles, wanting to be free

Skeleton In My Closet by Terrell Smith
On anon the bird sings.
On and on I try to figure out why.
Does he sing about the love or despair?
The caged bird rants on and on through the night.
On and on he crys
Why little bird why do you cry?
Here is the reason the reason that will show you why he sings.
For there are many monsters in his closet ones that are saddening ones that are cruel.
The bird sings secrets of a fool.
Oh what a fool he used to be now that he is a bird the only thing he can do is sing.
His confession time is up so please bird stop singing you are singing for what?

Let The Bird Go by J’kyra Space
I know why the caged bird sings
He knows he will be free one day
All he has to do is dream
He sings a song of freedom and hope
Because he knows the best is yet to come
He looks at the free bird fly
He wonders does being a free bird looks as good as it seems
All the worms you could eat
Not having to stay in the same place
What a wonderful world that would be
I know why the caged bird sings
He sings so everyone can hear his cry for help
Let me go
Let me go
I’ve been caged long enough
Being free is all I want to be
Don’t you know how it feels to be imprisoned all your life?
Can’t I live the life I’ve always dreamed?
But no one hears him
They just let him rot in his cage
He knows one day freedom will ring
He’ll be free
Him and the free bird will sing and fly together
What a wonderful world that would be

Please Don’t Judge Me, I’m Human Too by Maya Tarver
I know why the caged bird sings
behind my smile there is a story
to tell no one would ever
know what I go through. In
My life I am nice and kind to others
but they still bring me down.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Everybody is just a different story to tell
but everyday in people’s lives they
go through hell.
With so much hate inside feelings
you cannot deny.
I know why the caged bird sings.
Throughout my life
I try to face the different problems
that come my way I know
why the caged bird sings.
Now that you get the idea of how I feel and
go through you should have a good life because
everybody knows why the caged bird sings.

I
know
why
the
caged
bird
sings
of joy
now you are
